about

Score for unmade film "Prisoners of the Atom" which was to depict the story of 12 American prisoners of war who died during the Hiroshima atomic bomb detonation. Their plane was shot down by a Japanese battleship covered in living pine trees so as to blend into the coastal landscape. The bomber crew parachuted out of the burning plane only when smoke filled the pilot's eyes and a crash landing was untenable. The captain saw to it that the bomber was evacuated when he jumped last. The men were captured by Japanese villagers of a small fishing community. They were tied, blindfolded, and fed rice. At night they would be harassed by women who would pinch them violently. A Japanese military escort picked them up. The captain was taken to Tokyo where he was interrogated. Their chief question: why hasn't America attacked Hiroshima yet? Was there to be an impending bombing campaign? The captain knew nothing. Of his men, he would be the only one to live. The others were taken to a Hiroshima police station where they were interrogated. Some of the men were subject to vivisection at a nearby hospital. The bomb fell and Hiroshima was wiped out. Two of the POWs survived the initial blast. In the shimmering hellscape of atomic war, they were tied with wire at a bridge by a Japanese officer. A sign is hung on their necks, holding them responsible for Hiroshima. They are blindfolded once more. Irradiated Japanese citizens gathered at the bridge, and gathered stones to throw at the two Americans. Gradually the Japanese officer begins to vomit blood. The two Americans are hunched over, an eerie crucifixion. The stones strike weakly as the stone throwers lose their strength, and fall to the radioactive earth, all life fading from them, all to be washed away by the coming black rains.
